California's Wine Country is the number one bicycle touring destination in North America. And there is a reason so many people choose to spend their holiday here on bikes.
The scenery is outstanding and the backroads are perfect for touring by bike. The wine is world class and makes a great diversion at the end of a bike ride. (Some people think the bike riding is an excellent diversion before getting to the wine.) The accommodations and food are top notch. In short, biking through California's Wine Country will likely be one of your most memorable vacations ever!
The excellent biking in the area is a combination of quiet back roads, a few dirt roads, and the occasional road with traffic (such as the Silverado Trail) that is so beautiful we just have to include it. Our short routes are mostly flat to rolling while longer routes have some significant hills, for those seeking a workout. There are occasions when we have to go up and over a hill to get to the next valley but the van will always be there if you need it.
We spend time in four different wine valleys during our five-day trip: Sonoma, Napa, Alexander, and Dry Creek. We also have the opportunity to stay in four separate small towns (Sonoma, Yountville, Calistoga, and Geyserville) in four extremely nice hotels.
Notes
Our rental bikes are excellent cross bikes with upright handlebars, appropriate for most cyclists. Road bikes (with dropdown handlebars) are available for $40 per day.
Accommodations
We stay our first night at the Sonoma Valley Inn, one block off the main plaza in the heart of Sonoma. The hotel is within walking distance of everything Sonoma has to offer and within biking distance of several nearby wineries! Our second night we switch to Napa Valley and the luxurious Yountville Inn. The four-star Inn is one of the nicest hotels we use on any of our tours and is right in the midst of wine country! Our third night we spend farther up Napa Valley in the Mount View Hotel & Spa in funky Calistoga. The hotel is on the main street of town and offers a luxurious stay at the end of the day's ride. Finally, we head back over to the Alexander Valley for our last night, a stay in the Geyserville Inn. Geyserville is a tiny town in the middle of vineyards and this is a great way to end the trip!
